Why Do People Hate Music Theory?

Why Do People Hate Music Theory?

By: 12tone

It should come as no surprise to you that I think music theory is great, but shockingly enough, not everyone agrees with me. There are large swaths of the population who view theoretical analysis as pointless at best and insulting at worst, but, like, why? And why is it that this seems to happen more with music than many other art forms? It's a complicated question, but I actually think it's coming from a really good place. I think it shows just how powerful and important music is to many people, and I think it's natural for people to be protective of things they're passionate about. So how do we convince them that they're not under attack?
