Happy Summer! Greetings from picturesque Bar Harbor, Maine! I've been here for almost two weeks singing with the Bar Harbor Music Festival. First, I prepared a solo recital for an afternoon Tea Concert two Sundays ago and this Friday will mark my first performance as Susannain Le Nozze di Figaro, one of the greatest, most beloved and LONGEST roles in all of the operatic repertoire. To say the least, I'm very excited....and sore! Turns out--Susannanever sits down!

It's been a wonderfully busy summer so far because Chef Paul and I were married on June 1st in New Orleans and had two additional wedding receptions in Chicago AND went on our honeymoon in Mexico. Lots of celebrating (too much eating) and not enough cooking! In the midst of all the celebrating I did have a lot of music to prepare and I may be the only bride to ever take her Le Nozze di Figaroscore with her to the pool on her honeymoon! Now that's dedication to one's craft!

After a month of wedding jitters and festivities, I was ready to go back to work. Chef Paul came for a visit for the first few days and we repeatedly sampled some of the best of what Maine has to offer--lobster, clam chowder and blueberry pie!

For this particular gig all of the cast members are staying together in a gorgeous and enormous house on the water in Mount Desert, ME. We cook, eat, chat, laugh, load the dishwasher, do a lot of singing (we also rehearse in the house) and have a lot of fun. I haven't done a lot of cooking, personally, just some of my usual tricks in the kitchen from being on the road--my frozen brown rice, fruits and veggies, eggs and toast. I've picked up some wonderful recipe ideas from my colleagues who've been cooking family-style meals for the group. More power to the true "singing chefs" who not only cook delicious food, but have mastered the art of cooking for a large quantity! I admit that I haven't the energy, desire or gutsto step up to the plate. I know that if CP were here, he would do it!

As for Susanna--she's a work in progress and I'm just fortunate to have this opportunity to get the role off-book (one of the first big challenges with any role, especially the kind with lots of Italian recitative) for the first time. After this first performance is behind me, my manager and I can look for more opportunities to perform this role and if a last minute opportunity presents itself I can accept it without hesitation.

For now, it's time to review Acts 3 & 4 for rehearsal tomorrow. To quote Susanna, "Chi al par di me contenta!" I sure am one lucky gal!
