Jimi Hendrix had a uniquely powerful approach to the guitar that masterfully incorporated both "lead" and "rhythm" guitar into a single idea that beautifully illustrates that there is no genuine distinction between "lead" and "rhythm" guitar, just great guitar playing.

Jimi Hendrix has so many great songs. The intro to Little Wing perfectly illustrates Hendrix's ability to perfectly blend chords, double stops and single note lines into one coherent whole. Here's a collection of great video lessons on Little Wing.

Love the Hendrix....

we should probably start a thread on Curtis Mayfield to really get into the roots of the Hendrix rhythm guitar style. Heres a short compilation of General Jimi Hendrix technique:

  • Yeah, we should look at the roots of the Hendrix style. Who else would we include? Curtis Mayfield....Buddy Guy......Jeff E 2013-04-24T20:41:29.0Z

I don't want to cause too much controversy, but some one has to bring it up eventually. The Jimi video is edited a bit strangely, but the version is great..

Stevie Ray Vaughan or Jimi Hendrix?

Here's another Hendrix tune that uses that Curtis Mayfield rhythm guitar style..

Please don't try to play guitar like Jimi Hendrix. Learn from and apply his magic to your own sound. BB King said copy someone else is plain like a cheese Pizza, everyone will eat it but it can't get really good till you put your own toppings on it.

and here is some friends at EMP today during folklife.... I guess its been over 40 years since Hendrix so it must be folk music or at least old folks music...

This is a clip from the Dick Cavett show...check out Jimi with the Gibson SG. (It's pretty out of tune by the end)  Not an earth shattering performance, but it's cool to see Jimi in a low key setting.

  • Wow, that is an amazing video, and it's funny seeing "James" play an SG. One of the most overlooked skills of a lead player is rhythm, and this video shows you what a master of rhythm Jimi Hendrix was, which was not only a launching pad for his leads, but also added quite a bit of texture within the leads themselves.JP 2013-09-25T15:11:19.0Z
