How do you learn to play guitar and sing at the same time?

I've been playing guitar for a while and can sing a bit, but I can never seem to do both at the same time. As soon as I start singing my right hand just sort of stops playing, and I just randomly flail at the strings. Anyone have any tips on how to improve with this?

  • There is no overnight solution for this. Even if you have the best singing lessons online, the skill of singing while playing the guitar can be achieved through practice. Lots and lots of practice. Get a song with lyrics and chords which you know by heart. That would make it easier to combine both skills. I hope this helps! Mostly, I think the answer is just practice! No magic bullet. A couple of easy things that have helped me are:

1. Pick one song to practice that you know REALLY well on the guitar. Don't try to learn something new. You need to be able to play the guitar part on automatic pilot. This is probably the most important thing that helped me.

2. Play it slow. SUPER slow....

3. Metronome.

its actually very easy. maybe you need a microphone so you can hear your voice louder whilst playing.

it really gives you a bit of confidence.
