Derek performs and records the five orchestral woodwind families, including saxophone, clarinet, flute, bassoon, and oboe. He specializes in low woodwinds for pit and theater productions. In addition, his knowledge of world instruments includes Korean Danso and Sogeum, Chinese Dizi, Indonesian Suling, baroque recorders, Native American Flute and Irish pennywhistles.
Derek is an integral part of the Utah music scene, performing in theatres and venues, as well as studio recording for groups such as Book on Tapeworm, Dreamworks and other independent projects. Derek has continued his orchestral career as well, playing with groups such as the Utah Symphony, the Utah Valley Symphony and the Lyceum Philharmonic. Along with his twin brother, Dallas Crane, he leads a new group, the Studio Orchestra Club, dedicated to teaching students the rigors of the recording industry and giving more recording opportunities to skilled musicians.
Derek is a currently studying Studio Performance at Brigham Young University under his mentors, Ray Smith, Daron Bradford and Chris Smith, as well as Chad Lefkowitz-Brown and Drew Powell. He has been a member of many of the top ensembles, including Synthesis, the Philharmonic Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Wind Symphony and Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band. His studies have taken him around the world, including jazz festivals in Montreux, Brienz, Tuscia, Rome, and Boston, and concert performances in France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Mongolia, South Korea, and Japan.
